AN EFFECTIVE MISSION STATEMENT BALANCES THE POSSIBLE AND THE IMPOSSIBLE Within business management, and according to our experience, an effective mission statement basically replies to one question: How do we commit ourselves to succeed in this business? How do we commit ourselves to succeed in this business? It is determinant. It requires companies to make decisions in relation to people, investments and other resources, and prevents them from falling into the trap of other mission statements: ensure being everything to everyone at all times. The question forces to describe its greatness and pittances, to determine at what point of the competitive scene they must be placed in order to gain benefits. Yes, benefits; that is essential. Determining the mission is a responsibility of the general management. A mission cannot, must not, be devolved to anyone rather than those, in the end, who will account for it. Defining a good mission and developing values that support it takes time and requires commitment. It involves participating in extensive and fierce meetings from which we would like to get away, when we’d rather focus on our real job; implies painful moments where people we like must get fired, but they neither understand the mission nor follow it. On days like these, maybe we would like the mission and values to be dim and generic. But they cannot. We must invest the necessary time and energy. We have to make them real. From Gestión Quattro, we can help you define a good mission and values.
