What is a vision statement?

A vision statement provides a written image of what the company finally wants to be, something that could be 5, 10 or 15 year in the future. This decision do not have to be abstract, it must give an image, the most definite as possible, of the status it wants to reach.

A strong vision gives all members of the company the shared mental frame which helps shaping the generally abstract future we have ahead. Vision always goes after the mission (purpose) and values. A vision without mission is simply the expression of good wishes not pertaining to a solid and lasting base. The typical elements of a vision statement include the desired scope for business operations, considerations the company will give to interested parties (customers, employees, providers, governors, etc.), leadership or competence areas and strongly supported values.

Effective vision statements must be: 

• Concise
• Include all interested parties
• Consistent with mission and values
• Verifiable
• Possible
• Inspiring
